Aquilegia canadensis
When is giving someone flowers an insult? When it’s Red Columbine... and you’re Victorian. A bouquet meant foolishness, cuckoldry, and “deserted lover” in the language of flowers and was considered a metaphoric slap in the face when given to a woman, or bad luck when given to a man. Strange then that this flower’s name is derived from the Latin for "dove” (see the clustered “birds” hanging from the vine?).
